energystar.gov — Typical bulb = 100w, a CF bulb that outputs the same amount of light = 23w, a difference of 77w. Multiply that number by total # of US Households (~120 million) & you can see that if every home switched out 1 bulb, then we would save about 9.24 Billion watts of electricity per kw/hour -Enough energy to curb emission levels of nearly 800,000 cars

I've switch all our bulbs to LEDs, 1.1 watts now my only bad habit is leaving lights on because of the low energy output. The price point is around $5 a bulb.

I love the energy savings math, but can't say I like the bulbs much. I have to agree with other comments on the sterile quality of the CFL lights. I probably use three lamps in my house on a regular basis, and the warmth of the light (no, not the actual heat... yeah, I know incandescents waste a bunch of energy to heat) is a huge factor on the aesthetics of the room.

the state of Michigan has actually been doing this with apartment complexes.....they give each tenant a bag that contains a water saving shower head, 2 water saving faucet spouts, 1 rechargeable LED flashlight/night light, 1 led night light, and however many CFL's the tenant requests....all free of charge.....

Replaced... Most bulbs were already CFL but I replaced the rest with CFL's after this thread. Only a dimmer light in the dining room can't be replaced since these say not to use them with a dimmer switch.40w flametip .. 7w CFL flametip4x40w vanity globe... 4x 9w vanity globe5x40w vanity globe... 5x 13w CFL ( the lower watt CFL globes didn't fit )40w lightbulb... 13w CFLBefore... 440wAfter... 121w--------------------Saved... 319wCost: $48.22Estimated Savings per year: $38.46

One of my bulbs went out and I'm not gonna ever replace it; now im better than all of you!

Bedevere,Did you use CFLs in places where you turn lights on and off several times a day? This can shorten the life of a CFL significantly, but I don't know where that "spectacular smokey fashion" part comes from - If it failed, it wouldn't smoke, just stop working......methinks that might be an exaggeration. If you buy from a reputable company, and use them properly, they ARE long-lasting. Also, not all of them emit white light. I just bought a big CFL for my torchiere and the light it puts out is almost exactly like the light the old halogen strip emitted. Maybe you don't have a good selection where you are. Home Depot here where I am has probably 40 different CFLs you can buy.

I found the following comment to be quite ignorant.""It is people like you who make me think that things like incandescent light bulbs should be banned and that strategies should be adopted to force inconsiderate sorts like you to conserve energy....."A poster wrote this in response to someone who said they did not like the light of CFLs. CFLs are a stop gap measure and just because someone disagrees with a particular strategy someone prefers doesn't make them a godless tree-hating heathen. There are lots of big questions about CFLs. Damage to eyesight is just one. Mercury is another. Additionally, the push is going to make some corp a tremendous amount of money. (Can you say "ethanol?"). And when they are mandated their price will skyrocket because demand will be through the roof. Furthermore, the proper disposal of CFLs (because of mercury) will require more truck driving and plant operation at the proper disposal site.. So there isn't even a guarantee that less net electricity will be used.To blindly grab onto whatever is the environmental sexy topic of the day without really looking at it and insulting all that disagree with you won't help the environment at all. We must be careful and intelligent and question ourselves. The real problem is fossil fuels in our cars and in our power plants. Making everyone give up what you think is worth giving up is tyrannical. For instance aquariums and clothes dryers, and dishwashers (drying cycle), and air conditioners use much much more electricity than incandescent bulbs. Why not outlaw them? The real problem is fossil fuels in cars and at power plants. The reason why they are over-consumed is that their price doesn't reflect the true social cost. If power plants were taxed based on their CO2 emissions, personal choice could be maintained and consumption would decrease and there would be an incentive to develop cleaner technologies and the tax money could be used to fund more alternative energy sources. Forcing people to have one particular person's preferences is just another intolerant totalitarian approach. It won't work and it denies freedom of choice.

NO.I do not need your Mercury added to my groundwater, thank you for asking. Now if you want to install 30 year active life, white LED lighting fixtures that use less than half the power of compact flouresents - THAT would be a good idea.

I agree. Too much hype for a questionable benefit. Does anyone know what the total environmental impact of CFLs is? For example, a CFL weighs about 3 times as much as a comparable incandescent. If you include the weight of the heavy-duty plastic box most CFLs I have seen come in, the weight ratio is probably 4:1. Now what about all that extra energy that is needed to haul all this extra weight around in gas-guzzling and global warming -causing trucks and airplanes? What about the extra energy needed to produceand process all this extra material?

A bulb with hyper-toxic mercury vapor is an enviromentally hypocritical replacement for a safe bulb that is slightly larger in energy consumption. How much will it cost us to safely dispose of these things? I'm sure we will get taxed somehow because of it, that is the only certainty.Plant a tree, don't buy products made from non-renewable resources or from unsustainable sources, call, mail and petition you Gov Reps and companies that create pesticides, and other deadly chemicals that poison us everyday if you really care about the environment.

Skip the Mercury Filled Compact Florescent bulbs. Use White LED Light fixtures - Even Less power used, and last 30 years...
