marketingpilgrim.com — Kevin Rose has just announced that Digg is scrapping the Top Diggers list, believing the move will take away the perception that just a few hundred Diggers control the majority of the 5,000 submissions each day.

choice of category was deliberate.

I don't know why digg would want to screw its submitters so bad. None of us get paid for submitting, we should at least get something.

Clear something up for me. Are they actually taking power away from the top diggers or just making the system less transparent?

@tomboy501They do keep in contact with a lot of the top users, but I honestly don't think any of them really wanted their recognition taken away from them.

"Seems there is a lot of things that this site could improve upon first before messing with the ranking system and the Top Users list. Dupe check and search function improvement seem critical."I really agree with that and also wonder why they left it so you can still see your rank from the profile page? So now it's just more of a pain in the ass to compare yourself to other Diggers, but the rankings are still available.About the only benefit seems to be that it'll be harder for spammers to find and contact the top diggers to try and solicit them but this doesn't outweigh the benefits of having easy navigation and plenty of transparency and info available to the users.

@ tomboy501I agree wholeheartedly about the competition. Even though you probably had more stories promoted in the last two minutes than I have in a year, I still liked the competitive feel the Top Users list provided.I do think the system was slightly flawed. The friends system was unintentionally abused to promote rank.In the interest of sparking competition again, I think Digg should hide the "submissions by friends" option and only show the name of the Digger once it gets promoted to the front page. This would serve two purposes: First, it would still allow you to see what your friends are digging. Since you digg the stories you submit, their submitted content would not be entirely lost. Second, it would weed out a ton of blogs, even the political slant, and truly have your submission dugg based on quality and merit.I think if you enjoy real competition, this is the way to go. If you enjoy quality articles, this is also the way to go. Seems to be a win-win for all sides.

@Popdmb"In the interest of sparking competition again, I think Digg should hide the "submissions by friends" option and only show the name of the Digger once it gets promoted to the front page."I don't agree. I befriend someone for two reasons: 1) I know them in real life2) They submit or comment on stories that interest me.I don't always digg what my friends do, but if I specifically like what a person tends to put up there I want to see the new things happen.
