Digg owns the trademark to Digg. That means that if you were to register the domain name Digg.com (you managed to snatch it up when the registery expired), you, bylaw are required to give the name to Digg, or have it taken; because Digg literally owns the name Digg.This applies to Twitter accounts. I don't think that they'd sue anyone over it, but Twitter complies with Trademarks, so badda-bing; what is Digg's, is Diggs. (Not the owner of Reddit's.)
The idea is that you might be interested in what other people (eg., your friends) are up to. You can learn more about them (eg., what interests them, where they are, etc.), and that can lead to other things (interesting conversations, meeting up to do things, etc.).
