physorg.com — Will you lose weight and keep it off if you diet? No, probably not, UCLA researchers report in the April issue of American Psychologist, the journal of the American Psychological Association. Good. Now I can go back to my Chee-tos and Red Bull guilt-free.

@sinurgyI am getting really tired of all the "free weight" crap.Free weights are no better than using a machine that is set up to properly do the same type of lifting.I use a Crossbow (like a Bowflex but 1/3rd the cost). Along with dietary change (diet means what you regularly eat - this article talks about weight loss programs) I lost 45 pounds and put 30 back on in muscle.I used my machine for 30 mins a day (changing my workout a couple times a week just to make it non-repetitive) and did 20 mins of cardio a day.Now I'm doing 20 mins of cardio almost every day and use my machine 3 times a week. Still building muscle. The funny thing is that a few of my "free weight dork" friends find it astonishing that I was able to get where I am in such a short amount of time on a machine. The machines are just as effective (and safer in the long run) than any free weights. Why do you people keep perpetuating the myth that free weights are better than a machine? Do you have any proof other than some "Joe NoNeck" telling you otherwise? The nutritionists and doctors I have spoken with have clearly stated that they are just the same .The "problem" with machines is that people get bored with them. These same people would probably get bored with free weights. Another argument is that 100 pounds on a machine is less than 100 pounds in free weights. That makes NO sense. 100 pounds is 100 pounds. It's the quality and accuracy of the machine that is important here, not that there is a real difference in the weight. In reality, consistent tension, which is how machines work, is safer and gives you an even, sculpted look that you can rarely attain using free weights (thus why you always see uneven muscle formation in free weight lifters). With that said, free weights are the way to go if you want to look like The Incredible Hulk (minus the green). If you want to look sculpted (and keep your neck) you should use the machines. As for cost, well, free weights are cheaper if you consider the amount of weight you get with a machine. I recommend a Crossbow (by Weider) or a Bowflex if you can afford either of them. I started out with 250 pounds of bands and have just recently purchased additional bands for a total weight of 400 pounds. And so, in summary, keep in mind that both have their uses, free weights and machines, depending on what you want your goal is.

@cdahlkvistI like how you complain about the "myth" of free weights and then make up your own myth about them causing you to look like the incredible hulk. I honestly don't think you have any more proof for that than your "free weight dork" friends.Way to be a hypocrite.

People don't want to have a lifestyle diet. They want fast results using a technique the can forget about once they hit their target weight. That does not exist anywhere, ever.I lost 40 lbs and have kept it off for just over a year now. At first all my coworkers were asking me what I was doing and how I lost it. I told them "I keep track of how many calories I eat a day and make sure I get regular exercise. That's it. Easy." They were not interested. The next day I would hear them talking about how they were going to start their new South Beach diet on Monday.

Salient point:"If dieting doesn't work, what does?"Eating in moderation is a good idea for everybody, and so is regular exercise," Mann said. "That is not what we looked at in this study. Exercise may well be the key factor leading to sustained weight loss. Studies consistently find that people who reported the most exercise also had the most weight loss." ...in other words "Dieting doesn't work, and, uh, we didn't bother studying people who did it right."Sincerely, digger who lost 45 pounds over the last year and is still going. I'm not dieting. I've permenantly changed my lifestyle. And I've never eaten so much damn food in my life. Go here for more info (no, this is not a sales thing)http://www.johnberardi.com/articles/nutrition/7habits.htmPS: I even right before bed. Ha! Yep, no kidding.... But my bedtime meal contains certain planned ingredients...not just anything.

People need to know what they burn per day, what the consume, then get the second number below the first.

Apparently, this common knowledge has not been stated often enough to convince the millions of people who continue to starve themselves, buy diet pills, and keep book authors and diet companies (Slimfast, etc.) very rich. It took me 1 year to lose 45 pounds, and it stayed off. Slow and steady wins the race, people!

I'll totally agree with you. You have to change your lifestyle before you can ever lose weight. I don't consider what I do a diet but a routine. I have set myself up with a permanent lifestyle. I only eat at home. I only buy groceries that are healthy. I stick with lean meats such as fish and poultry, fruits, vegetables, cereals like cheerios and total, nuts, eggs, oatmeal, whole wheat breads and pastas but only once a day, and beans. I take a dietary supplement twice a day to aid me in fighting fatigue and adding in nutrients I wouldn't get anywhere else. I take http://greenteaevolution.com to help with this. I make it a point and force myself to go to the gym a bear minimum of 3 days a week and most of the time go 6. This is all because I am determined to stay fit and active and never be 200 + lbs again. I lost 47lbs in 3months by changing the way I live. I have maintained that weight for 6 months and never plan on living unhealthy again!
