Designer: See, look at this, if we improve our design we can increase profits by 13%Boss: Thirteen percent? That could make us billions! Security please see Mr Designer out of the building, also box up his personal effects and send it to his home.Designer: I'm Fired?Boss: Of course, if we stand to make this much money, we sure as hell are going to find a better employee than you, or else you would be showing me Our Companies 13% profit increase.(not that I fall for this "data" at all, its probably just a seasonal or a change in marketing, probably a few million spent on advertising and the work of hundreds of people who aren't this guy and his forms.)
Exactly. An even better example than MySpace is Facebook. Facebook users (like me) are rabid about keeping the site simple, elegant and minimal without a bunch of clutter and fancy graphics. Good design is more than just making something look pretty or edgy or cool, and especially so when you're talking about the Web. A poster or a painting or even a video is not interactive, it doesn't actually have to do anything except stimulate your senses and make you look at it. A Web site must do those things, but it must also be functional and intuitive. Many designers think it's up to the developers to make a Website functional, but in reality it must start from the beginning with the design and layout, and you must know your audience and listen for suggestions.
Hi, I wanted to tell you about a design contest we are working on with SIGG Switzerland. The SIGGART Design Contest, which aims to find the next great Eco-Friendly design for their one-of-a-kind reusable and recyclable customized bottles. The contest asks you to design a concept based on your personal “Eco-Style,” to design a SIGG bottle that represents your eco-outlook on life. The winner’s bottle will be produced by SIGG in time for this year’s holiday season and sold exclusively at Patagonia and on http://www.MySIGG.com. The winner will also receive 100 bottles with his or her design to share with friends and colleagues. A percentage of sales from the winning bottle will go to a non-profit organization called Surf Riders, which fights to keep our oceans and beaches clean. I hope you can invite anyone interested to participate in the contest. The contest will run through June 1st and is hosted at http://www.MySIGG.com/SIGGART.
