Offering other distros on their desktops is a bad idea for Dell. Anyone who's savvy enough to want a distro other than Ubuntu can install it themselves - there's no reason to provide other customers with a confusing and unnecessary choice when they can promote Ubuntu as the "standard" distro instead.
Dell does suck. There are other vendors who provide better hardware at similar prices, and you can almost always do better by buying something custom built from a local computer store (at least if you want a desktop). On the other hand, they're a well known brand that provides computers that generally work and are reasonably cheap. More importantly, they are the *only* mainstream brand that provides Ubuntu pre-installed. That makes it possible recommend an Ubuntu desktop from a well-known brand.Another issue is Laptops. Most people don't even know that there is a choice other than the mainstream laptop brands - and again, Dell is the only option for a mainstream-branded Ubuntu laptop.
Great..commie software for the commies! Makes sense. Hopefully this means less windows developers from offshore and since there is not much Linux development they can stay over there! I love it.
