dell.com — When the Dell/Ubuntu machines were announced, it was possible to extend the default warranty to 2-4 years as well as adding "CompleteCare" accidental breakage protection. These options have since been quietly removed from all Ubuntu systems though remain on the Vista ones.Is Dell serious about supporting Linux or was this all just a PR stunt?

Personally Im an Arch Linux user. Im not one the people that uses it because its "elite" I use it because its lightweight, fast, and pacman is awesome. Rolling releases are great. Now..Ubuntu...I have run it for a while on this same machine, and I have to say Ive never been dissapointed with it. Its an awesome OS in my opinion. Synaptic is great for those who may just not want to do all the cli stuff. I just installed Feisty on my sisters laptop actually. I think its great Dell is offering this option. As far as support...when I started using Linux I didnt know jack about it...but there are countless forums, wiki...and one of my favorite resources IRC channels with users that are usually more than happy to help. For newbies I can tell you from experience if you ask a newbie question there is always the chance of getting 'flamed' on IRC but, usually your question gets answered either way. All in all I think Ubuntu is an awesome OS...not my system of choice but I wouldnt discourage anyone from using it either.

Girl, you really need to use the sarcasm tag. You're at -17 diggs.

I'd imagine Dell has appropriate support boundaries in place for Ubuntu. It's foolish to think their trained staff are fully conversant in all aspects of the OS.

Luckily for Dell it doesn't really cost them anything extra to offer a couple of models in a Linux-configuration. I think they'll get some traction from business customers, but for home users I don't see it selling machines. (I use either Linux or OSX exclusively, I'm not a windows fanboi at all)

I just went to Dell and configured an XPS 410 with Ubuntu. I was offered an extended three year hardware warranty, next business day in house repair, for $200. I was also offered a 3 year Complete Care Warranty. So, what is this about Dell dropping hardware support for their computers loaded with Ubuntu? Are you claiming that Dell will recant the extended hardware offer I selected if I were to go to checkout? I can't see what the hullabaloo is about. Looks to me like Dell has not revoked the ability to buy an extended hardware, or complete care, warranty with the Ubuntu machines.

There is no conspiracy around our offering of extended warranty options for Ubuntu hardware. It was a simple glitch in our ordering system and the options are available. Visit www.dell.com/open
