engadget.com— Thinking of a new Eee PC or maybe Wind laptop? Hold up, Dell's about to loose this baby on the sub-$500 mini-laptop world.

Ubuntu runs Wine's hugely flawed emulation of DX9. But yes, "Ubuntu will run on any system windows will run on". Assuming it uses Atheros or Intel for its wireless access of course.
those $500 laptops are nothing compared to a computer like the Eee, ive seen many 500 computers that are just crap and not worth it at all. so don't say that not to mention that these computers are supposed to be portable not powerful, any 500 standard computer is going to be big, crappy hardware, bad battery, and a computer like the dell, eee are small good battery, so saying that its not good because there are 500 computers out there is just dumb.
Dream on Microsoft/Dell.....Don't even THINK of cornering the market with computers/Ubuntu! "IT AIN'T GONNA WORK!" Why you say? All the PCs out in PC world who used to run Windows XP and NOW are being told that Windows XP will go out like the "dinosaurs." Vista is about to be dumped because of lack of sales. Now, Microsoft is offering touch monitors with no mouse and now this? The "word" has gone out over the net that Linux, Open Source, is the "answer" to those who need a "secure" and relatively easy OS on their computer and these same computers that ran Windows XP can accept and run Linux whether it be Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva etc because they have the VM features on their computers that will accept Linux. Mr. Gates decided to fight "Open Source" by deleting from his newer computers the devices necessary to download and run Linux. So why would someone want to buy another Microsoft/Dell computer that prevents an individual from installing/running Linux (Ubuntu) on their own computer when their own computer, once Windows XP is uninstalled, can install and run Linux from CDs that cost no more than $6.00 to install! So Bill Gates knows that he can't beat or get rid of Linux, it is here to stay! So, he is offering his computers to get people to "forget and get rid of their own computers." Ya gotta update, and get a newer and more powerful computer! Ya sure! All you need is to get more memory and buy a Linux live CD and the remaining programs from Security to Office suites can be downloaded into your computer via the server! As long as you have the VM feature on your old or older computer you can install a Linux OS on it. Don't listen to Microsoft, do your own research about Linux on its myriad or websites! Linux is growing and Bill Gates knows he can't fight the "Open Source" movement or Linux by threats of lawsuits over his allegations that Linux has stolen his patents! He doesn't have a legal leg to stand on and he knows it! It your can't beat them then join them; that's the old saying and now Bill Gates is offering his "new" twist on Linux, be it Ubuntu or Fedora! I will make cheaper PCs or laptops with Linux (Ubuntu) already installed in it! So what! you can do the same with your computer by uninstalling your Windows XP OS and then installing Ubuntu from a purchased ($1.99 to $5.99 Live CD) CD on your own computer! Don't by the Madison Avenue crap! Save money and you still can have a great, secure, and relatively inexpensive OS on your present computer!
Agreed - I love my 701, but the first thing I said to myself when I opened the box was "why didn't they use that extra space to make the screen 25% larger and put the speakers somewhere else?". Regardless, good to see some competition. I'm hoping this 'ultra-mobile pc' market grows rapidly - if my EEE PC had a larger HD and a little longer battery life I would ditch my other computers and just carry that with me everywhere. It works great with a keyboard, mouse, and monitor plugged in at home or at work, and is obv super portable for any other occasion.
Ordered my Dell Mini, I'll be reviewing it via video and posting on youtube. If the build quality is as good as some have said it is, It may very well be the one to get. The HP is nicely built, but VISTA!! wow super slow.. My 2.4gh care duo 2 full sized 17" desktop replacement Sony Viao Studio on Vista is a dog compared to XP. Really the Netbook market should be limited to certain specs, HP and others dropped in huge hardisks etc... These are net books not miniature, slow laptops, The biggest attraction to the net book department is there small size and rigidness of the solid state storage, not to mention battery life. The netbook is a great idea but the waters are getting muddy with all the stretching of the definition of what a netbook is, Dells Mini is a netbook, HPs mininote is just a small single spindle laptop, Asus has also muddied these waters with there lineup changes.I for one know I can get a 32 gb thumb drive or SD card and in combination with my 16 gb SSD int he dell will provide all the data space i could need, Already i have almost every app i could ever need on my 8gb thumb drive via portable versions of many man popular programs like.. Office 2007 (yes Office 2007 in a portable format) Photoshop, Dreamweaver, almost every thing I could use I have in a portable format , thanks to Thinstall, a app that makes virtually any app a portable app.In my opinion a netbook combined with a Cellular data card and a Bluetooth headset will be more effective and functional than a iphone, use skype and you get calling for a few bucks a month for unlimited calls world wide. And use any program under the sun for the most part.
