seattlepi.nwsource.com — "Ubuntu is free, and machines pre-installed with it will be less expensive than PCs of the same configuration that come with Windows, [Jeremy Bolen, a Dell spokesman] said. He declined to say by how much."

They can't knock much off, they're going to need so many extra helpdesk people, and the training therein. Due to the price difference, there's going to be a number of 'inexperienced' users that will buy the ubuntu models based on that alone. If this goes wrong, it could kill any and all chances of ubuntu becoming mainstream, as the rep will be tainted a great deal. I'm not saying it will go wrong, but there's the possibility.

When you buy a machine with Ubuntu (or any Linux distro for that matter), you can be sure that all the hardware is going to work flawlessly. That's really the main benefit here. The biggest setback for most people hoping to switch to Linux is that some piece of hardware doesn't work immediately. Hopefully, Dell being the first to offer Linux preinstalled should improve the situation. If Dell is successful, then other vendors may start doing the same, and eventually the problem will be a thing of the past.

Bolen is a credible source from Dell, it seems. So this is good news.<a class="user" href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=Gln&q=Jeremy+Bolen+Dell&btnG=Search">http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=Gln&q=Jeremy+Bolen+Dell&btnG=Search</a>

IMO, if they are cheaper, best part will be dual booting Ubuntu/piratedVista.

One thing that gets overlooked here is that if you buy a computer with Ubuntu pre-installed you are guarenteed to have it built with Linux-friendly hardware. And this helps even if you want to install a different distribution of Linux. And I don't think it being perceived as a budget version as necessarily a problem either, I think a lot of average Joe's welcome budget versions whenever they see them.
