Somebody up the line was crying about wanting to buy a Dell with (insert_your_fav_distro_here).. Suck it up!I recently bought a fantastic Optiplex GX620, the current corp model, with P4D-2.8Ghz, 512mb ram, 250gb sata drive, on the Dell outlet for $419!! When it arrived, I booted it up to the MS EULA screen to be sure all was good, and popped a CentOS4.4 DVD in it, and proceeded to install... Damn fine machine, and an unbelievable price.. especially when we buy the same machine at work and pay between 900-1000 clams for it... You can barely build an equivalent machine off NewEgg for that price, even if your time is worth nothing!! Plus since you're buying the machine from the corporate side of Dell, these machines come with a "corporate" warantee, ie: 3yrs in this case.. and if you need service on it, you're not talking to BangAGong, India.. I Recently bought another, in a small form factor case, same specs, same price, for a MythTV system... YAY DELL!!
Haha my copy came in yesterday from the Power Together campaign Microsoft sponsored. I got a copy of Business edition for free. It's running very well, and I haven't had trouble with iTunes, Windows Media Player (now sharing music), and Firefox. Paired with MS Office 2007, it's pretty damn sweet.Yes, it is a legitimate copy, believe it or not.
It's been out since November. Thus far, the vast majority of people who have _actually tried it_ have been impressed. The only times you read about people who hate it are people who used builds like Beta 2, or didn't actually run it, but read about something like the protected video path (I wonder if people will bitch when Apple has to implement it? Because they will for BR support.) and wrote an article whining about it.
The nerds/Linux users also said bad things about XP, Windows 98, Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 Some people never learn. That is why the grunts will remain at the bottom while the big boys deal with the big stuff.People will move on and the majority will be Vista again but maybe take a llittle bit longer for adoption rate. Wish just 2-3 years from now we can have articles coming out "what were those idiots thinking Vista would flop when we are all using it today?" oh wait....Rinse- wash - repeat....
Dankers:>That is why the grunts will remain at the bottom while the big boys deal with the big stuff.Big boys do play with Windows. Most server administrators, though, run Linux for a reason. They've learned their lessons.I'll give you an example -- when XP came out everybody noticed how Windows didn't blue screen as badly as it used to. Why? Because Microsoft created a setting to, instead of blue screening, just reboot the machine. You can imagine how unthrilled server admins like myself were with that development. I wonder what their next surprise with Vista will be.
