theregister.co.uk— What links two PCs? A server of course! But this woman ordered a server by mistake, now DELL is not helping her with a refund.

It's pretty wild to think that someone could 'accidentally' buy a server, but there are still a lot of people out there who find computers baffling. They just can't wrap their heads around it. A lot of these people tend to be folks who spent most of their lives without computer technology. I think digg.com heads tend to have a myopic viewpoint. I bought a Dell laptop for my business...why? Because it was cheap and I couldn't afford anything else...and I needed the laptop now. I knew in advance about the terrible customer service I would most likely receive (and did), but I am fairly web-savvy and was able to find this out on my own. It sounds like this person didn't know exactly what she needed, but trusted that Dell would take care of her and she could just get on with her business instead of dealing with complex (for the those unfamiliar with computer technology) networking issues. Maybe she's too busy trying to put food on the table. Just a thought...
I don't believe the article at all. It is a phony for sure. But, the concepts we have covered here are still well within our understanding, and I am truly glad that we have all agreed, finally, on this.
Having bought a dell laptop for friend, I would like to share with you my experience.ORDERED: A top of the line inspiration. Every upgrade imaginable was included with a price hovering around the $3000 markIt took dell almost 8 weeks to ship the laptop, here is what came back Everything i ordered, but instead of a wuxga lcd, it just came with a the base wide xga lcd Called dell customer care and they told me that DELL MADE NO MISTAKE ON THEIR PART, even so i reviewed the order twice with the sales representative. Their reason, because i should have called them earlier since the receipt was emailed to me. In theory they are off the hook because i didn't catch the mistake and did not call them back, after all who would imagine such a big company to have such incompetent sales personnel. Here was their offerSend the laptop back, and since they are back ordered on the wuxga lcds, the turn around time will be over 6 weeks, plus pay the extra for the wuxga monitor. When i was ordering the laptop the price came out over a hundred dollars less, and hence the reason for going over double checking the order twice with the sales rep. When i asked the original sales rep, why the price didn't match he told me that he got me a "special discount". Needless to say since the laptop was ordered for business management, not having a laptop for 6 weeks (that's a month and half) was out of the question, after dozens, and no exaggeration here, of phone calls and escalation to the highest supervisor, Dell refused to acknowledge fault and fix the problem.LESSON LEARNED:DO NOT USE OUTSOURCED SALES REPS FOR **ANY** PURCHASES! the rep was from India and obviously had a hard time understanding me, and instead of asking for clarification, he tried to act smart... Also don't use mail order companies when ordering for someone else, Believe me, it takes a long time to live down promises that went bad...P.S. my friend got stuck with a top of the line laptop that has a wide xga screen, believe me he doesn't recommend my services to anyone now... used to be a great source of clients. Don't make the same mistake, play it save and stay away from dell
Ok,So I know this is quite old now, but just to make things a little clearer for those (I assume most) Americans commenting - particularly those saying she got what she deserver, Dell shouldn't take it back etc. For a start, the order was placed over the phone, so, regardless of what Dell try to say this purchase is covered by the UK's 'distance selling' regulations - ieIf you sell goods or services to consumers: * on the internet or digital television * by mail order, including catalogue shopping * by phone * by faxthe Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000 may apply to your business.Key features of the regulations: * the consumer must be given clear information about the goods or services offered * after making a purchase the consumer must be sent confirmation * consumer has a cooling-off period of 7 working days ( full info http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/guide/distsell.htm )I suspect Dell will actually have dragged this out long enough to get passed the 7 day cooling off period.I'm also suprised at the number of people here who think that it's perfectly fine for the Dell sales person to act in such a manner - (s)he was clearly trying to make a fast buck at the expense of a customer, you can see that, yet you think it's ok? Do you know what dishonest means?/sickened
if you dont think she could configure IP or filesharing using a switch or a crossover cable, what makes you think she could configure a corporate server?
