pcpro.co.uk — "The TV ad said, 'Whatever you need a PC for, Dell has the one you want for less than you might expect. Right now get this Dell Inspiron notebook featuring an Intel Celeron processor for only 299.' A website address and a phone number were displayed on the screen at the same time." There were 23 complaints the laptop was actually 349 online

Yeah well that's close to bait-and-switch and BS imo. What is even worse about all this is the Dell pop-under ad that appears when reading the story. So wtf is that about? Making $ when I view the story on how Dell misleads people? That's a bit misleading.

Who the hell goes into a car dealership and asks for "that car from the commercial?" Do you WANT to get ripped off?

Please stop bashing on Indian tech support. Its not like US-based tech support is any better. Indian (and other non-US) tech's are typically alot more courteous. The AOL call was US based tech support. Calling tech support is almost always going to be painful for tech savy users.

not to be mean but, why exactly is our tech support over there?

I just received an email from Dell this morning (I'm on the mailing list because I bought one of their monitors--highly recommended, BTW). The title says "We heard you - Inspiron notebooks have simplified pricing and no system mail-in rebates."The email body has a link which says "New Simplified Prices on Inspiron Notebooks: the end of system mail-in rebates, the start of a great experience"I find it funny that they sent out this reactionary email, even though most people on the mailing list probably weren't even aware of the issue/problem.

You only have to check out their website to see this on an ongoing basis, front page offer €499 - Customize price €560. Coz they don't include the warranty price on the front page. This practice should be stoppped but who is gonna do this, apart from the little guy protesting to the various authorities regulating such issues.

Dell could save themselves some grief if they just say "get this PC with ***** for as low as..."

Having worked in a Dell Sales Call Center, I can reliably confer that:Any advertised sales price issued by Dell is BS. The only way you're getting that price is to badger the phone sales person into selling you a base unit with no (or 90 day limited) warranty. Most of the time the phne sales person can't even find a configuration to match the advertised price. Many was the time that I'd configure and reconfigure and call the team lead over and re-reconfigure. The telephone sales person's sole task in life is to upsell. If the phone sales person's morals are slightly shakey then you'll wind up paying for at least a 2 year warranty and be old "it's part of the package." Which it's not. They prey on the technologically unshophisticated and leverage their financing option like it saves the world, but really it just lines their pockets with your hard earned money.Fie! Fie! Fie! on Dell. That was the worst 90 days in my life. I should have run quickly in the opposite direction when I heard the word 'sales', but I needed employment badly at that point in time. And I'm sure that I'm not the only one who has ever been there.

How can eBay sellers offer new-in-box Dell machines at lower prices than Dell sells identicaly configured machines? Is it gray market? I've bought two this way, saving about 10% each time. And how can Dell not respond to this competition? They must be losing sales.
