ideastorm.com — Imagine how successful Dell's Ubuntu offering could be if just one Dell Ubuntu machine was put in retail stores. If people knew of an alternative to Windows, they would go for it! White box computers scare me.....I hate telling people that they can't use it like that because its a really great CPU mounted on a mobo made from tinfoil and hope....

Most users need only a web browser, e-mail, and word processing. Linux suceeds at this with flying colors.

i say we gona start somewhere to educate general public that linux is another alternative to windows. putting ubuntu desktop on dell shop is good.... even for just demo purpose...salesman can ofcourse emphasize that it is for more advanced users.

I disagree. That has nothing to do with the point. The point it to get linux noticed, and out there. If people start playing with machines, they may come to like it. If someone simply said to them that windows apps generally dont run under linux, but there are buggy ways to get them working.. or FREE ALTERNATIVES, I think people will think twice and become interested by the idea.
