fanboy.com — My new theory is that not only does Digg count a digg but they also factor if people are in fact looking at the stories, i.e. "How about reading some stories instead?" That?s right: Digg doesn?t just want your digg even if that?s the name of the website ? they?re in fact actively seeing if you?re looking at the story itself. Proof? The new DiggBar!

When I first submitted I only shouted my friends — but — I didn't have friends reshout until about 12 hours in, so when it was at 90 of that group 60 were my friends and 30 non-friends. So it had a high friends ratio which we do know is bad. But you are correct in that I've had several stories hit the front with less than 90 diggs. So it's not just page views — although it still can be a factor.

Whoa! I find that big toolbar annoying and close that tab when I'm done reading the story. If I want to digg the story I return to the original digg page and give it a digg. Does that mean that it is not counted the same? What about those infrequent occasions where I've read an article early, thought it was good but was too lazy or busy to submit it, and then dugg it when I saw it appear on digg?I hit the "Digg" button on the toolbar at the top this time around. Then I shut that tab and came back to put this comment in.

I'm assuming (and this is a guess) that digg is checking if you've launched the story from the link, so they're counting your visit if nothing else which can only be good for the story...

Speaking of, why does anyone actually bother to digg articles? Or especially comments? I rarely digg articles, and I hardly ever digg comments despite reading probably an hour of digg a day. Seriously, what are your motivations?

I doubt it will only count for those with Digg-Bar installed, they will be missing out on a lot of counts if this is the case.I'm all for anything that stops people gaming the system, I would rather stir something within a recipient that will make them stop & think, rather than have a random Digg.
