I've been Source since it was released, and I must I like the free weekends. A bunch of new people play and I rack up easy kills while they play for free. Everbody wins.

They do it because it works. Last free weekend, they got a 25%+ increase in their regular player base, i.e. they got 20% extra sales.
They changed the Garand in the last patch. Sounds like someone should be trying the free weekend!
