Granted, but the collective "we" did nothing in response to the soft msgs, nor the hard ones, so we go with this and see what happens. What have we got to lose?
Sorry I can't find the link, but it was a reputable source - I think I've got the figures right:If anthropogenic CO2 production was turned off completely tomorrow morning - no cars, no planes, no cement manufacture, no power stations apart from nuclear - the earth would still warm over the following decade by a further 2C due to the latent storage of the planet. 2C is a massive rise and will make large parts of the world uninhabitable which are currently borderline inhabitable. Sea levels will rise and displace millions of people.Of course, CO2 production will not stop tomorrow - it will continue to be pumped in to the air in increasing quantities. The Arctic will continue to melt, decreasing the albedo effect, methane will release from thawing permafrost - then it'll get real interesting. We've polluted the oceans and reduced the large fish stock by 90% since 1950. Imagine that - 90% of the ocean that had big fish are now empty, or filled with floating plastic islands. We're currently in the midst of the fastest mass extinction in the fossil record - caused by man.The more science I read, the more I think, "yeah, we are so f**ked". I'd love a 'skeptic' to disprove it all, but they never do.[note: I wrote the above before I watched the clip - looks like Letterman read the same as me]
Jesus. He does get it.Is there a live audience in that studio? If so, why were they laughing? If not, why was the canned laughter being played?"We're f**king up the planet and threatening our existence""ha ha ha ha"
We need more rants like this from more corners of our culture! Then, maybe the "leadership" will step up. Obama is at least talking about it; I hope he gets the chance to join the rest of us who are trying to do something about it.
It's amazing how it takes David Letterman to make this point to the American people. The audience finds this funny, but he's not joking, and he is correct. It really it too late. But if the Republicans are still in power on January 12, 2009, the Earth may as well get it over with and fall into the sun.
