linux.com — "I recently acquired a 256MB USB pendrive that I use for storing. As a Linux fan, I went looking for the simplest, smallest distro I could find that could boot from a pendrive. I found Debian-based Damn Small Linux, whose long list of bundled applications fits into a meager 50MB. The more I use it, the more I like it."

And with 64GB thumbdrives coming out... why does this even matter?

If you have a larger USB thumbdrive, you can install a full CD-based distro on it. I got a 1GB drive just for that reason, as prices have just recently came down and made this relatively affordable.700MB-or-so for the CD, plus space for your own files.Your full choice of any of the CD-based distros out there, not just special "lite" distros like DSL.Here's a posting I, and others, made about our experiences putting a bootable Knoppix on a thumbdrive:http://www.knoppix.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23558
