betanews.com — The number of households using broadband is expected to double within the next three years as DSL surges past cable Internet as the high-speed service of choice for consumers, analyst firm JupiterResearch said Monday.

I remember expressing on DSLreports.com how DSL sucked in my house. I was promised up to 1.5mbps, and never got higher than 600 kbps. I wrote that I was getting ripped off because my bill was only half of what I paid for cable, yet the connection was more than 6 times less. The guys a broadbandreports kept saying it was my fault for not checking the CO distance (which I did) and for not checking reviews in my area (which there were none). Needless to say, I haven't gone to broadbandreports in a long time.

Who cares?DSL contention rates are still generally horrendous (where I live). I was online with Bell Atlantic (now Verizon) DSL as soon as it was available here on the east coast. Those first months in the "beta" phase was the only time DSL was worth having. I cancelled less than a year after putting up with 3 months of service that went from spotty to non-existant. My service was down for over 13 days straight when I finally gave up.Now, SEVEN YEARS later the horrendous contention rates are sill present, actual throughput is still well below advertised rate and prime time outages are still frequent. Meanwhile, Verizon is spending who knows how much on advertisements and promotions when they've never been able to serve their PAYING customers properly.During the same time I've gone from 128/1.5 to 384/6 for the same price with 1 major problem, 4 years ago using Comcast.Given that relative to all the bulls**t I've put up with over the years from Verizonand Sprint at home and at work it's going to take a miracle for me to consider paying for anything they offer or have their hands in.

"The guys a broadbandreports kept saying it was my fault for not checking the CO distance (which I did) and for not checking reviews in my area (which there were none)."I was living less than 300 yards from the CO and had a similar, equally horrible experience when I danced with DSL. Like so many "enthusiast" type sites dslreports is overflowing with bulls**tters sporting a truckload of acronyms and anecdotes to distract you from their half-assed understanding of the facts.

Heh, I remember when Windows XP didn't even include a dialup adapter (which was included in 98, etc.), so DSL couldn't even be used. Been using cable ever since (5 years).

I can't believe there are actually broadband fanboys. What's best for you depends on what's available and what you can afford. Oh, and my Xbox360 is better than your DSL connection, and my Wii has cool gameplay and is FUN (not to mention SO innovative), unlike your cable modem. Ugh :-P

Comcast 6.0 Mbps download speed, upload speed of 768 Kbps (You will never see these speeds.) No static IP and in my area they have been swithing your IP every 30 to 60 mins to fix some Vlan bug on and the price $57.95 they have a max per month you can download.

In my area we have Naked dsl... but dsl rates are 6mb max.. I usualy only get 2mb max average 500k that's only if I'm downloading from a usenet service. But it's still better than cable internet.. The clame 18mb but for the 6 months I had comcast internet.. it was down atlease once a week forcing me to reboot the modem. I also had the modme just fail... 3 times forcing me to wait for a tech to come out and replace hardware.DSL may be slower than cable but DSL is up 99.99% of the time. No, caps, no spying for media companys.. (so far).
