blog.digg.com— "Hey everyone - quick post to let you know that in the midst of going live with some back-end upgrades as well as our new comments system, the site has had a longer than expected outage tonight..."

Problems with the new comment system.1.) In order 'expand' the replies to a 'main' comment, you need to click on that 'expand' button, the problem with this is that the button is in Ajax, and the replies are not loaded beforehand. So what often happens is when the sever is busy, the the 'expand' button says it's loading (and you can't click on it again) even though it's stalled, the only way to remedy this is to reload the whole page, and click on the 'expand' button again.2.) When you click the expand button of a 'main' comment and the 'nested' comments load, there is this big (relatively) reply box that pops up in the within the nested comments. (It's there for you to add a reply to the 'main' comment) This reply box is taking up unnessasary space (expecially for someone who wants to read the responses, not reply to them) and it'd be better if this can be 'hidden' until you click 'reply' on the 'main' comment. (So what should happen is the 'nested' comments should load and the reply box should be hidden (In the very same way of how buried comments(-4 or less) hides by default) until you click 'reply' on the 'main' comment)3.) When you click on 'expand' on a 'main' comment, it takes time for it to load, and what often happens is while I am waiting for the 'nested' comments to load, I'd be reading other people's comments, and suddenly the page will shift upwards when the 'nested' comments finally loads. This in my mind, is very annoying! I really hope someone at digg will change this.
I saw the new comment system yesterday. The site kept coming up/down/up/down and for a brief moment I was able to see the new stuff. I thought it was here to stay though so I didn't bother screenshotting it. The things I noticed:- Instead of replies automatically being nested, all replies to a post are hidden away behind a link that says "# Replies (most popular reply has # diggs)". When you click the link, it says "Fetching replies..." then they appear.- The thumb buttons are bigger and sharper.- The comment box at the bottom is cleaned up and has a green border around it, similar to GMail's "Labels" menu.I love the replies feature.. it looks like it's going to finally put an end to comment abuse (which I'm ironically doing right now, heh). Not only that but looks like it will speed up page load time tenfold.
