I can't help but be skeptical of this, on one hand AMD has had their stuff "ready for prime time" for a couple years now so Dell is kind of late to the party. On the other hand, Dell has been suffering lately, I wonder if this decision is not simply because they have come to the realization that AMD not only has the performance but the reliability that customers expect, or simply that AMD is cheaper and Dell is looking to squeeze out a bit more profit.Regardless of Dell's motivation, the AMD chips have gotten quite good so the customer should benefit.
Stock tip, you don't buy after the news because the market has already priced in the effect. Now if you knew yesterday, buying would have been a good idea.
Our datacenter is not alone is switching over, very happily, to Opteron based systems (4 way dual core mostly). The simple fact that Dell doesn't offer an Opteron product line has to be hurting them more than Intel can bribe them.
i will start by saying, good post. however, where are your facts? i agree with a lot of what you say with regards to benchmarks and their reliability. that said, one can say whatever one wants about benchmarks, but it has been generally accepted in the industry that AMD has had the technological lead in the recent past. those are just the facts. will that last, who knows? intel (the company you prefer) was standing on their soap box screaming about their "benchmarks," that they not only controlled in every way, but also controlled and set up their competition. i don't prefer that. marketing? intel? just the facts? are you serious? what happened to reaching 10mhz by 2005? intel, more resources for marketing? certainly. however, to criticize AMD for their naming system and laud intel for theirs is laughable. fancy name and big numbers? is it """EXTREME EDITION""" 840 smithfield dual core?

Sure it'd be insider trading technically, but that's how the market works.
