readwriteweb.com — The "wisdom of crowds" is a popular web 2.0 buzzword. At its most basic, the term means that two heads are better than one, and that still more heads will yield even better results. Crowdsourcing on the Web can be broken down in to three categories: 1. creation (like Wikipedia); 2. prediction (like Yahoo! Buzz); and 3. organization (like Google).

If only we could integrate this into politics somehow. @narkinbarf, below, so true! "Not everything can be democratic" .... reminds me of Dennis LearyThey can have all the Crowdsourcing they wantThey can have a big Crowdsourcing cake walkRight through the middle of Tienemen SquareAnd it won't make a lick of differenceBecause we got the bombs

How can "Wisdom of Crowds" be a popular Web 2.0 Buzzword? Isn't that a phrase? And isn't a buzzword... I don't know... like... you know...a word? Meaning one and not three? I swear the Internet has quite quickly become a mirror image of the real word and apparently none of the residents ever passed an English class. Now, calm down before you get your panties in a bunch, you may have, against my statement, actually passed an English class. Although, I don't really care. I'm just annoyed with every nub under the sun trying to sound cool and 1337 by using bad grammar, using words that they don't actually know the meaning of, and perhaps worst of all tlking lik this all teh time so we all know they are uber 1337. Dig me down if you wish. I still hate you. (^_^)b

anyone comparing general wikipedia accuracy favorably to britannica is an idiot or a cultist. the big "study" compared the accuracy of technical subjects, which tend to be done well at wikipedia because the mob generally limits its damage to blatant vandalism. look outside that, and you'll find rampant inaccuracy and terrible writing. without radical policy changes, that will not change. on popular subjects, unrestricted crowds bring little wisdom and no excellence. wikipedia is a fiefdom of control freak, mediocrity-encouraging "administrators" herding children down the bilge highway.

Ok, ok,..This is cool and all but didn't some one once warn of the tyranny of the majority and that the majority is oftentimes wrong? I mean,.. there is a minority who's needs are not met because there ignored. After all that is not the majorities problem and I bet that in some cases the majority screwed themselves because they ignored the voices of the few. Don't get me wrong. I love Digg and all but if there is one thing I have learned from 911 and the war in Iraq it's keep your temper and don't buy in to anything 100%.

The "Wisdom of Crowds" - isn't that an oxymoron? I think we've all seen the proof that it is, indeed, an oxymoron, via the DIGG gaming site's fascination with the Nintendo Wii. ;)

Have you heard of Galaxy Zoo? It is a very successful crowdsourcing project which shows that, if used right, crowdsourcing has great potential.
