theinquirer.net — The Croatian government has decided to adopt a free software policy and move entirely to Open Source. Proprietary software leads to too much dependence on suppliers, which can damage the market competition..OSS makes the government's business more transparent, it will save tax payers huge amounts of cash and strengthen domestic industry.

That's right, your from Balkan, not in Croatia, and we are not on Balkan. If this is true for Croatian government why did they publish that document? What is the point? I don't get it, if they in this case were driven by there own personal profit they would fight to bury that idea in the start..

I'm not sure if that's a funny or sad statement, I'm also not sure about some of our US congressmen.... seems like sometimes they just do what a lobbyist tells them to without thinking about how it affects themselves.

@r2d7 Having backpacked around Croatia I can assure you it is *not* a third world country or anything like it. So next time you feel like being a smartass, stop and wait for ten seconds and think: Do I really want to display my ignorance for all to see?For those interested Croatia is a beautiful country with warm people and I would recommend it as a holiday destination for anyone.

OK, here is the part i don't really get and always mistifies me. If you make something open source, great, good idea get many developers on it. But, then you end up in the same boat as Linux, you got 200 or so versions, maybe more maybe less. And of all of those verions, yeah, most are probably compatible with each other, but certainly there will be some compatibility issues. Now, even if you can get everyone to play by the rules, and obey standards (not like ie Microsoft) then how do you go about funding these projects? Cuz the way i see it yeah, you got guys in your office making improvements for your offices version of the software, they might publish it, they might not, or you have the guys that sit at home and do this stuff, or should i say there parents basements cuz they aren't being paid to actually do this stuff. And even if they got donations for there product, how is that different then buying a software package that isn't open sourced? So, the way i see it is that Open Source is fundamentally Flawed. Sure, Open Source is great if all you do is get it and modify it only for your office and help by contributing your experience in public forums, you start running into problems when a company takes the source, changes it, and re-distrubutes it. Personally i believe Linux would probably kick windows in the pocket book if there was like less then 10 verisons, just with different skins. But that's just me, Hoping someone can clarify this :-) cuz if everything went open sources and free, who's going to program these programs in the future when all the current programmers retire? Curious
