It's amazing that the author's of these articles continue to make the same mistake over and over. Verizon and Sprint are not options for the iphone because their network is not gsm! The only alternative is t-mobile.

@Weslocke:I've had voice dialing available on every single phone I've owned since 1997.Nineteen ninety f**king seven! How, according to you, is it hardware-dependent?

Doesn't matter. Rogers in Canada had a PR nightmare when they first released the plans for the iPhone. They were COMPLETELY within their rights to price it however they wanted. But the fact is that pissed-off customers forced them to change their plans. So turn up the heat enough on any company and they WILL back down, no matter how much they want to preserve their profit model. Having thousands of angry customers will do them more harm in the longterm.Legally they are covered 100%. But if they piss off their customer base, they WILL have to back down. So keep up the pressure on them and stay angry. You will get what you want.(disclaimer: I'm not in the US, and I don't use AT&T. But I saw the Rogers protest work like a charm last year, so it will obviously work in other places too).

Sadly, 4400 whiny bitches does not equate to much. Thus, your point does not stand.

You would lose your phone number if you did that...Good luck trying to get it back

This whole dilemma could be easily resolved and everyone would be happy by letting everyone have the new Iphone 3G S now for $199/$299 and extending the contract for 2 years from the date that a current Iphone 3G user would be eligible for an upgrade.Example: I am eligible for the new Iphone on May 10, 2010...If I wanted the new Iphone 3G S now my contract would be extended another 2 years until May 10, 2012...If another new Iphone with more features came out next year and I wanted it right away, my contract would be extended another 2 years until May 10, 2014.What's the point of making me wait for the new Iphone until my contract ends when it would be more profitable for AT&T to get me to renew the contract right now for another 2 years after my contract ends? Someone might be in the mood right now for another 2 years of service and change his mind at the date the contract ends.

My contract is up with AT&T and it will actually end up costing me $20 more than a new subscriber to get the iPhone if I try to upgrade... I think I want to switch to T-Mobile, they are cheap and from what I hear aren't too bad.

18 month 24 months who cares, any carrier you have to wait X number of months till you can get phone discounts. There is no reason they should make a special exception.
