pbs.org— Robert X. Cringely gives an indepth review of Boot Camp, and why he thinks this is another step for Apple toward releasing OS X for any computer.

OSX is only a placeholder for Apple until Vista comes out as the Mac premiere OS. Until then, Apple will milk all the revenue it can from OSX while weening their users off it. Dovorak was right.
"It just works" applies pretty well for Joe Normal, who is going to buy an iMac/MacMini, a printer, and maybe a digital camera. That'll work fine for him. Office works fine, Adobe stuff will work fine when CS3 ships.
Not only is Cringely correct, but OS X will become the new Windows when Vista fails to ship and Microsoft buys out Apple computer. Virtualization will give Microsoft the backwards compatibility it needs to maintain its customer base. I would say, "you heard it here first", but to do so is to take this alternate universe seriously.
for the type of work i do i need a system and OS that is seamless and stable so i do not think we will be switching to any intel boxes, apple or not, anytime soon.
Wow....Seems we have everyone in this forum.....Apple vs PCRISC vs CISc**ttle Endian vs Big Endian (well not yet)Well, apple has lost their persona.Apple has always gone with simplicity and elegance.PPC was risc....simple and elegantToward the end of their run, they have been going down hill....Hardware has been going down in quality......cough....maxtor drives....and cheap hitachis ipods.....The intel architecture is anything but elegant.....its instruction set is large, and crude.....instead of optimizing the pipeline....intel just adds more instruction that are supposed to be faster than the old ones....Apple may be faster when compared with a dell, but its nowhere near a homebuilt unit...My machine runs circles around the current benchmarks apple has out for their intels.....I have everything recognized on my machine except my soundblaster(no sound) and my monitor(good resolution but crummy refresh rate..)But yes....I would get the macbook pro.......if i had the money for a laptop....Well anyway......get yourself a mac os installation disk with an intel compileapply the drm patchapply the amd patch (if you dont have sse3)apply the anti-apple patch.....BANG...You got mac os on a homebuilt unit thats faster a commericial mac.....Also, benchmarks can be rigged.....Everybody does it.....Intel runs debuggers on benchers to embed instructions in their alus to skip processing when the program is executed....in effect....the processor would seem fast...because its not execution instructions.......Intel was busted around 2002-2003AMD was busted 1999-2002 and 2004-2005PPC was busted 2005How to tell ?Run some different less common benches and compare them to posted benches........Same is true with cars...Some post their mean MPGSome post their best MPGWithout PPC....apple is just another system builder trying to push product with cheap parts where it can, mirrors, and dim lighting....Though....it would be pretty cool if you went the dell site(i have never bought a dell because a dev should build his own system) but you go under os and its likeWindows VistaMac OSRedhat LinuxThe real problem is the extreme lack of drivers....and my lack of programming skills.....hey....but im just a freshman in college....

The only problem with this article is that Robert X. Cringley is a complete moron, who is well-known for getting nearly everything wrong about Apple.
