The real effects of LSD have never been studied because of the long campain of misinformation put forth by reactionaries in the US government in the mid 20th century. Essentially it was viewed as a drug that made you instantly insane wich could not be further from the truth. The majority of people who try a small to moderate dose of LSD experience "a profound and life-changing experience". Prohabition doesn't work

Crick, who died over two years ago, was described as not having the most agreeable personality. I would take anything his contemporaries said about him with a grain of salt. Apparently Crick also denied this rumor and threatened to sue anyone who published it.
