As a mechanical engineer I can assure you that we do planes, production machinery, finite element calculations, lifting structures, etc. Basically anything that involves transfer of energy, material resistance, dynamic systems and the possible fields are quite vast. This is just to say that our expertise is not limited to buildings or piping.
The problem with design is upping a SF by 1.0 on top of the 1.5's to 3.5s in most designs (depending on their purpose), is that this can often double or triple the price. Not just the SF increases when you want to. Mass, internal stress, and cost all increase as well. cost increase can get the the point where the cost of the crane outweigh simply erecting whatever you are in another fashion. There are situations where helicopter lifting can outweigh crane assembly or ground-up designs where buildings are jacked up (I have no idea what this crane is for but looks like a miner).Normally speaking, these failures in cranes are operator error. These machines are designed to take a certain style of loading. If that load is exceeded in less than ideal conditions, chances are you might have a failure. It only takes one member failure to cause a domino effect in a crane.I simply want to know if anyone was hurt. That is priority after an accident like this.Edit: It does look like it was the engine brake that failed for the cable reel. If that was the case, it would not be operator error, but a maintenance issue, or loading designation by the eng. or project manager on the job.
had that happen to me.. same with liveleaks.. reinstalled my OS.. fixed it.. tried drivers and different browsers.. made sure it was all up to date.. nothin worked till I reinstalled. they may be other options but that worked for me.

Lifts done by large cranes are almost always filmed.
