neworleans.craigslist.org — The lost and found section of Craigslist: New Orleans is now being used to help people find family members. Post if you are looking for someone. On a less important note - this is a very interesting and good use of technology.

So how exactly are flood victims without power or Internet supposed to respond to these? How are offers of "I'll make long distance calls for you" going to help people who have Internet access? I know I'm pessimistic but is this really a "good use of technology"?

Why is it that gay people always have to announce they are gay? I'm reading through that list and I come across "Gay couple willing to assist the displaced."Who the hell cares?? Just help for christs sake!SjN

I know this is semi-unrelated but wrt the looting, this is totally unacceptable behaviour. They should send in the army and give them shoot to kill orders on anyone looting electronics and s**t like I've been seeing all day. If it wasn't bad enough that your entire house was destroyed, but to come back and found it's been stripped clean by bloody scavengers...

SjN: Considering that it's the south, where homophobia is still very much in control, they probably think that it's best to be clear about the situation since it'll be pretty obvious who decides to live there and making things uncomfortable between anyone during an emergency situation probably won't help. Realize that they're doing something very generous and opening up their shelter to those in need, which is a HUGE segment of the New Orleans population who don't have anywhere else to go, and it's at their own risk to do so.On another note, I'm not clicking the submitted link, nor am I digging the story because, as interesting as this is, I'm concerned that the Digg Effect or the Slashdot Effect will make the site unreachable if we hit it too hard and it's too important that people who need to access the site are able to do so.
