Lemme get this straight...Because the record companies are making lots of money...and because artists willingly sign away the rights to their songs......it's okay to steal music? Is this not the biggest non-sequitor in history?

no.. i think the whole point is that they're not allowed to tell anyone. i think it applies to the reality shows in general, you get contracted to the production companies who reap off your b grade celebrity status in case you make it. oh, and props to Courtney for the excellent article. i guess like others i'm digging for when i read it

I agree, and an artist could set up and maintain a web site that they could except donations and sell music to download for probly a couple hundred bucks a year

Courtney Love...hmmm first thing that comes to mind is crack whore :)The article was good...I don't think it will benefit her though, her "music" sucks...:p

Anyone else find the irony in an editor's note on an unedited manuscript?

There's a little thing called "debt" you see... In the numbers she explained about how they do get money, up front, but are expected to pay various costs. Now, one doesn't have to dole out the money for these costs right away, hell, the up front money they get when they sign is debt anyway, an advance on their later royalties... So right away they have a million dollars, if they don't consider what should be happening with this money if they don't want to get in debt, people get excited and spend a million dollars rather foolishly... So the sharecropper argument is backed up.

Good article, although when I was scanning by it quickly in my news reader I thought it said, "Courtney Love does the meth..." and I thought, "Yeah, no kidding."

Hi, as a former musician that played (came up with my own parts ) on a popular bands album (not as popular at the time as now - 2003) I am glad that Courtney Love wrote this. One of the songs I played on was on one of the American Pie Movie ( the third one I think) sound track and received a decent amount of radio air play then (2003-4). The song was put back into rotation last year due the success of their newest album, it was included in a type of second release album. So in 2003-4 and again in 2007-2008 the song was getting radio play , hence royalties. Neither time have I seen any income from that except for the short time I was playing with the band on tour (and that wasn't much) and during the recording session (and that wasn't much either). I do get some bragging rights, but that's about it. So in reading her article I can attest to her points as a recording artist. So if she is still pursing this endeavor, and I hope she is I support it. I would hope that an industry being so well established has no means to protect or reward its artists would be willing to make a change. She mentions that other industries have done so and it has worked, so why not?
