vmware.com — This is so very cool. FTA: "Use the intuitive wizard-driven interface of VMware Converter to convert your physical machines to virtual machines. VMware Converter quickly converts Microsoft Windows based physical machines and third party image formats to VMware virtual machines. It also converts virtual machines between VMware platforms."

Is there any utility that will go the OTHER way (i.e. from virtual machine to actual installation on a bootable partition)?

No, you cannot just use ghost and restore to a physical server. It doesn't work that way.You need another converter like PlateSpin PowerConvert or HP Insight's Server Migration Pack. There are a few other products out there that can do it as well.

Another likely scenario for home use: I have an older GCC laser printer. It's a nice one, 1200 dpi, prints about 15,000 pages on a toner cartridge and does tabloid size, but the company doesn't have XP drivers (and don't even think about Vista). So I have a minimalist VM running Windows 2000 workstation as a print server, connected to the physical parallel port. Very handy.
