For the (currently) 718 of you who don't know, icon files are bitmaps.Open any file, in any image processing program.save as a bitmap filetype ".ico" in the file nameyay, now you have an icon(Yes, icon files can have some other features, like having multiple icons in a single .ico file, but this tool does not support that.)

Maybe you can try this one http://convertico.org/image_to_icon_converter/

Windows knows how to use a bmp as if it were an icon, but it isn't one. Before they came up with thumbnail view, there was a registry hack that allowed you make your bmp files all display their contents as their icons from within explorer. It works for some other file formats too.

Langford is exactly correct. The format is different, but Windows can also understand the bmp format and will use it in place of an icon.

PolyVector is right, the Creative Commons license and the like are there for a reason...

I give them to others, I don't expect others to rip off the artwork, modify it, pass it off as their own, charge others for it or give it to anyone else. When I work on a computer I usually install two complete sets of ani cursors that most folks love along with directions on how to remove them. I personally don't think the Creative Commons License applies to art, else the next time I visit the Louve I'm going to paint a frown on the Mona Lisa :-( Better yet the next time I visit Eric Raymonds home page I'm going to grab that PNG turn it into an animated gif replete with horns a sleek body with forked tail then paint it candy apple red :-{l)>

http://media-convert.com/This seems too good to be true. Can anyone confirm that it rocks hardcore?
polyvectorSep 3, 2006
@Muddle... That's just moronic... Obviously those works of art aren't under a Creative Commons license, which makes it illegal... You've managed to miss the point entirely...
