businessweek.com — The bill also makes it a federal crime to use a video camera to record films in movie theaters (punishable by up to three years in prison for the first offense) and sets a penalty of up to ten years in prison for sharing a movie or a song prior to its commercial release.

can the argument be made since it is legal to edit out content in a DVD shouldn't it be right for the average joe to rip the DVD to his hard drive and do this him or her self without paying to clearplay . since it is legal isn't the movie studio hampering with encryption? can they be sued now? just a hope .

Oh give me a break people! What's wrong with having the option to cut out swearing and uncomfortable content from a movie if someone wants to? Clearplay doesn't force anyone to do it, they just have the option. If you prefer your movies uncut, that's fine. I just don't understand why people who want to view a movie they own are considered nazis for wanting to mute profanity.

I would assume Congress would find the offenses far too harsh, and I would assume they would vote to lower the offenses before even passing it. But then again, it is a Republican congress...

Seriously though..."Some lawmakers said they objected to the filtering provision but voted to approve the bill because of the crackdown on copyright infringement in other parts of the legislation."um... split the bill. I've never understood why bills are allowed to contain more than one issue. "Yes I'm against mandatory killing of cats but I signed the bill because it also included the right to double-dip without having to call it."

Agreed b04155, there is a name for this, but I can't remember what it's called. Coat-tail... piggy-back... I don't remember, but it's a load of crap. It's the only way crappy lawmakers can get their crappy laws past so they can win the crappy election in Crappville, USA for passing the Crap Bill.Poop even.

that stupid. if you dont want your kids seeing stuff like that then dont let them watch movies that have it. make them watch spongebob or something.

wormdrink: i believe the word you were searching for is rider. i agree completely. i can't believe people are missing the point of the law and arguing about fair use rights. this law is about criminalizing a civil dispute, modern protectionism and mercantilism for the entertainment industry.

My brother was talking to me, and made the point that a lot of you are upset because you believe that it's un-American to "censor" a movie we're watching. However, it's that very freedom you hint at that gives me the right to leave the room when a part I don't like comes on. It's the same freedom that gives me the chance to mute what I don't want to hear. AND it's that same freedom that allows you to NOT purchase this technology, but which allows ME to do so. Clearplay doesn't alter the work. It just gives the option in its settings to skip scenes I woulda fast-forwarded through anyway, and mute the parts I would have muted. If you don't like it, simply don't buy it and move along.

Politicians are always trying to protect the children. They never say they're going to wipe out poverty or give universal health care to protect children; the big plan is to wipe out indecency. So indecency and harsh language in movies are the only thing assaulting our children? So we get rid of that and we'll have an Utopia here? Yep...sure will!
