networkworld.com — He spoofed the HR director's work phone number, then the number of that guy's boss, before moving up to a vice president, and finally, the CEO. Says he had no choice. He also says "this thing that I did is bad and should be outlawed." He even spoofed a White House number. Fascinating full interview.

"Juvenile? Yes," Bell acknowledges. "Effective at getting past call screeners? Absolutely. Subject to horrible abuse? Totally."If the fact that a 15-year old prepubescent voice on the other end doesn't make you scratch your head you have bigger problems than CID spoofing :)

Maybe he works in a useful call center. Like for you credit card company who is actually calling to tell you there's fraud happening with your card...

You were wrong. It's easy and, you don't need any service just some equipment to send a properly encoded message down the line while the call is being connected.

I read a story very similar to this on a blog/website recently. Where the perpetrators and the victim knew each other. Either you are the same person or you lifted their story.Perhaps you could link to the news stories covering this remarkable situation, where life or death could hang in the balance, surely it was covered in your local area, if not nationally.

Just in case that wasn't sarcasm:1) What gives you the impression that he thinks he's better than us?2) It's not a question of "rights". Caller ID is a convenient feature that ideally can be used by everyone. Unfortunately, less reputable people are allowed the opportunity to do harm to others. That, my friend is a problem; a problem that the anonymous spoofer (as well as myself) thinks should be prevented. Does that make ME think I better than you? No (at least not for that reason). The spoofer only used spoofing to get in touch with someone, not to harm them. I repeat: NOT TO HARM THEM. I bet he would have no problem with you doing the same if he trusted you to be an honest person meaning no harm. UNFORTUNATELY, not everyone can be trusted.

ATT Or maybe NSA already logged into my voicemail and that's why I never have to log in when I call. I always thought I heard heavy breathing on the other end...

A great site for this is spooftel. Another great site for a lie detector service that work similarly is liarcard. Liarcard is actually quite accurate. I'd give it mid 80% accuracy level. It lets you hear the other person heart beat too somehow. Both very cheap.

Ok so when your bank calls you is there something all the caller id? If your bank has T1s coming to their ACD/PBX then the telecom guy is probably programming what the outgoing ANI is. Just like what Stealth210 is saying. Some management type phones will want their ANI/CallID to be their DID (direct line) but it wouldn't be cost effective to give each one of those users a dedicated line. So you set the phone system up so that when that user dials out over the same set of trunks as normal agents it will set the ANI to their DID. Also you can have a bank of agents (even a small one of 10 or 15 agents) that are making personal outbound calls. You miss the call and they leave you a voicemail "Please call us back at xxx-xxx-xxxx" you look at the call ID and it's the same number so you don't have to look for a pen. All of this is done over the same set of T1s.Another misconception is that just because your bank calls you personally it doesn't mean they don't use an autodialer/predictive dialer. There are thresholds you can set that will ensure that any time a customer picks up an agent will be available to connect the customer to immediate. It doesn't mean that agent called you, to them it's more like an incoming call. Typically big companies will do it that way because it is more customer friendly. Small s**tty companies are small because they think it is acceptable for an IVR to call someones house and say "call us back".I don't even know what that whole SUV/BoA line is supposed to mean (I drive a Sonata) but ok.
