kgbarchiver.sourceforge.net — KGB Archiver is the compression tool with an unbelievable high compression rate. Unfortunately although it has a powerful compression rate, it also has high hardware requirements. It can compress a 430MB MS Office ISO to a 1.4MB file, which is small enough to fit on a floppy disk. (If you don't believe me see comments for link to the archive)

MP3 size before: 2,65 Mb; size after: 2,51 Mb (at "extreme", 2 Gigs of RAM, taking 3 minutes). Song playable too here.Winrar size after (compression method: best): 2,57 Mb.So it seems to work, only taking exponentially more time for every Mb more to compress...

fake. extracted in 7 hours aprox.. Setup.exe does not execute complains of digital signature mismatch. checked some of the files at least the headers seems appropriated for some of them. Just out of curiosity would like to try bloating a file with 0-255 repeatedly for 10 MB ( as it is compression takes long with the prog) and see the compressed size.

fishy... i think it's a trojan horse that has an uncompressed size of 2 megs.

This story does look amazing. And I started to doubt it when I read all the questioning posts above.HOWEVER, a quick Google search for this software may actually validate this piece of software. It's been downloaded thousands of times from download.com and Softpedia durong the single month it's been published. Both include rave reviews. Softpedia even absolutely guarantee's it's legit. In addition, there are dozens of mentions for this piece of software all over the Internet.Might this still be the real deal guys? I have yet to see a single proof otherwise!!!So this software is either a real revolution in compression or the most amazing scam ever.----------------------------http://avidardik.com

Just to recap: KGB is legitimate; the Office archive is not (most files in it are filled with 0xFF or other junk data). KGB's own website shows that it can compress pure text data to a minimum of 7.8% ; it is impossible that it could compress varied data comprising binaries and CAB archives (already compressed) to much less than that (specifically, 0.3%).

I could earn enough money to buy myself a "legal" copy before it finishes extracting on any normal computer. Based on the stats that I've seen - it'll take my computer about 15 hours or so to extract.

You would still need to leave it on overnight UNLESS you have some sort of supercomputer.

Oh, and neither the KGB archiver nor the fake Office ISO archive are viruses, trojans, or anything like that. KGB connects to the internet to check for updates and to load an embedded (harmless) web page when you start it up, but then it does not connect any longer. The fake office ISO archive cannot make KGB connect to the internet; it does not contain any executable code. It is simply a hoax archive that is filled with junk files. Completely harmless.

Greets:* The archive works, doesn't seem to be a Trojan. Here are some interesting findings though:It seems to compress small files (
