compusa.com — CompUSA is closing 128 of their 228 stores, leaving them with just 100 open locations. Check the CompUSA Store Locator to find out if your local store is remaining open. Stores will be handed over to a liquidator starting tomorrow, so there may be deals to be had.

Too bad the WRT54G's have been nerfed s**t since around late 2005 (aside from the WRT54GL, which is more or less a NewEgg/mail order special) The DD-WRT et al Linux people figured out how to un-s**t them just as Linksys changed to a different chip, and those can't be fixed yet.The whole home electronics thing made no sense to me, since it was all kind of ordinary and expensive at the same time. And a wall with Riceboy, er, Monster Cable all around. At least at the SB/Goleta one since Costco is right across the parking lot, and it's worth buying a membership just for the no-hassle sales. And with Costco they don't push TAP because you don't *need* one ;)

Uhhh, they added multi item shipping discounts like a year ago.edit: should have refreshed, but it was definitely closer to a year ago they added that.

I for one, am sad that the other ones will remain open. That has to be the worst store I have ever known. They are also known as CompUSSR, and of course, CrapUSA. I will do my best by not purchasing anything at the ones that remain open so they will also be shut down, and hopefully an electronics retailer with good prices and who are aware that they need to retain customers in order to survive, will take them over.

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but I guess I'm lucky. I'm in FL, and there are 2 within 20-30 minutes of each other (taking the highway). There are two others that are maybe 45 minutes away. I'm glad I have some to go to, since a Best Buy just opened up 5 minutes from here. It's odd why they keep so many so close to each other in Florida though.

Good riddance to the Schaumburg store. Too small, poorly lit, poorly organized, understaffed, understocked, and God forbid if you needed anything locked in a case... getting a manager with the key was a 20 minute ordeal every time. The Geneva store, on the other hand, was exactly the opposite, and being such always made me wonder how CompUSA could let stores operate on two very different levels. Guess I don't need to wonder any more.

Somewhat glad my local store isn't on the list, but even if it were I wouldn't care much.I lost faith in CompUSA once I figured out their "Sale item policy": Advertise an awesome deal for an item, but only stock 1 or 2. (Save the other 4 in the back for employees to buy the night before.)And honestly I'm sot surprised by this news also considering their shady check policy; Customer gets rain check for item, CompUSA promises to call when item is in, customer comes in weekly to inquire on status but stops after three weeks of "It'll be in next week" responses, months pass with no calls, item is discontinued, CompUSA discards all rain check and never calls to inform customers, finally customer comes in to inquire, CompUSA associate says "We called. You're SOL sucker!", customer says "BS. I have voicemail, caller ID & call records that say you're lying", customer doesn't return to store for a year. (Happened to both me, AND my girlfriend. :-[ )

Hm, apparently the list is of stores remaining OPEN. So actually, I guess my "I wouldn't care much" comment applies. :-/Awesome misleading headline, submitter. O_o

i used to work at the detroit store, and it's been around quite awhile ... sad to see it go, but hopefully it makes way for something better. strange, this store was recently remodeled within the past couple years. anyone know if there are still clearances or anything going on?

Part of the problem is when contracting stores to locations so few and far between, is that they will still have a presence in your state (likely) but just out of a reasonable driving distance (30+ miles) from where most customers live. Whoopeee.. now how much better would the Compusa prices need to get for you to travel out of your way and still pay your state's sales tax.. particularly in HIGH sales tax states?!?Might as well do mail order from someplace else cheaper, and out of state so you generally skip the sales tax, although your generally legally obligated to report such on your state's tax return these days right? Hah! b/s, if the taxes weren't so high in the first place businesses would stay and people could afford more.. But look at it another way, don't pay the sales tax in your state, the bastards add a few pennies on your gasoline price.. they get you coming and going!!!Personally, I'd welcome a Fry's Electronics up here in the Long Island, Ny area! Usually when a big brick and mortar closes this many stores, something fills the void (walmart replaced old "service merchandise" and target replaced caldor--remember them?!)... hope it's something that has electronics/computers! Around here we're contracting from 6 medium to big electronics stores to 5:best buy, circuit city, staples, office max, and micro center. Nobody's going 30+ miles to Manhattan for a compusa price... sorry, not gonna do it.. customers are just NOT that loyal around here..
