arstechnica.com — Some cards are now available, like Asus' EAX1800XT, that offer an external 80 Watt power supply to ensure that the computer's own power supply doesn't get overloaded. The next logical step would be to remove the graphics card from the computer completely, and put it in an external box.

"Let's get rid of the communications bus altogether. What I want to see is a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), Physics Processing Unit (PPU), and Central Processing Unit (CPU) all on one chip, sharing the same cache memory and sharing memory between them."The performance might be awesome, but I dread to think what sort of cooling you'd need on that thing.

"You've never heard of 10 Gb Ethernet? iXGA anyone? All this is essentially is doing to video what the SAN does to disk. It's brilliant."Oh dear god, the next thing you'll say is.....PLAN 9. [For those who have no clue what I'm talking about, Plan 9 was an operating system from Bell Labs that thrived on the ability to have seperate components of the computer in different boxes, often in different buildings; for any capabilities you wanted, you simply added a box of processors or a box of disks, etc.]

I have a gaming laptop (desktop replacement), but it's card only goes up to ati mobile 9800 256mb. Not too bad, but it has a great cpu (P4 ht 3.0ghz) and the memory is fine for me (1.256mb). Now i can pay 350 on ebay for the highest card for my laptop or I can pay $X and get an external video card which will be faster with more memory and could also be used with my desktop. I see this as a plus. If i could use both video cards at the same time great. All i want is another processing unit, I don't really need it to even connect to a monitor I would like to use the one my laptop has.
