dailytech.com — Team Xecuter thought that those hackers shouldn't be the only ones to be able to play backup games for the XBOX 360 game console, and has announced that the group is very close to releasing a first generation mod-chip for XBOX 360.

Oh yeah, that too. I'd definitely like to see a version of Ubuntu running on the 360. If I remember correctly, the CPU has an extended PPC instruction set, so porting a PPC *nix shouldn't be too bad.

All I really want my Xbox 360 to do is playback video files off of my portable hard drive. Stupid not to allow this as the Xbox 360 does not have a DVD burner or any other way to distribute video files. Even if it was limited to MCE files, that would be fine.

You stated it yourself as to why they want to squash homebrew: Money. They want to sell their SDK, which, by the way, has anyone gotten ahold of the X360DK? Without that, we won't be able to even make homebrew, let alone run it on the X360. But really, I think that's what it boils it down to in the end is money.

The article made it sound like it was a modchip. It is something you can pop on to the dvd drive board, to flash the modified firmware that current exists and is in use.

Why is everyone still stuck on XBMC for the 360? There are now 4 (maybe more) Media Center plug-ins for the 360 that lets me:1) surf the web2) play any media I want (yes, that means Divx, Xvid, Real Media, H264, TS files, etc.)3) play DVD isos4) have rss feeds5) rent movies online and download them to my PC to stream over to my 360 (that includes movies in HD)Heck, there's even a Mame plug-in for Media Center. I've not tried it though. This is over and beyond the normal crap that the 360 does as an extender. No more Tivo for me since my PC handles all that stuff very well, thank you (I have a dual analog tuner and a digital tuner with QAM support). Vista will support DVD libraries by default (unless MS striped it out of Vista)Do a search on Runtime360. Have a look at what he's creating for the 360 and Media Center. And the Media Center software can be purchased as stand alone. About 100 bucks everywhere you look. If you pay more then $120 then you've been had.

that's not a mod chip. mod chip allows the user to run unsigned code, this does not allow that, this method just allows you to play copied games, and have the ability to turn that off to play on live.

Even if you had sloppy soldering skills, drilling down would allow you to solder without damaging other pins.

With a modchip there is an endless possibility of what you are capable of doing and if you have the brains and you know what you are doing then you can pretty much use the xbox 360 as your own computer but there is always a risk that u will screw something up while installing the modchip so unless youve got the money for more xbox's then i wouldnt do it.
