The overuse of Comic sans is partially due to ppl wanting a relaxed non-threatening typeface. That's why you see the signs in the cafeteria "Clean up after yourself" in Comic sans. The same sign typeset in bold Arial or TnR would make the message more aggressive looking - thats how important the right typesetting is, and even the lunch lady recognizes that. There is simply no substitute for Comic sans unless you install some 3rd party fonts, like Nueva <a class="user" href="http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1107.html,">http://store.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_1107.html,</a> which i think is an equally casual typeface.Right or wrong, Comic sans has filled a gap, so i think credit should go to the guy who designed it and the guy that decided to package it with windows by default.
Anyone who thinks that Comic Sans has "no purpose", or that using it to be kid friendly is "the wrong reason" has a remarkably narrow point of view.Comic sans is an absolutely invaluable font.Remember learning how to read and write? First thing you start with is the alphabet. Now what's the first letter of the alphabet? What does a lower case "a" look like? The comic sans lower case "a", or every other font on your computer's lower case "a", with the curly bit at the top that nobody ever writes? The only real problem with it is that in pretty much any other context, it screams out "I find computers scary, so I'm using a friendly-looking font."
And you only drink Kool-aid, and you only eat Jujubes, and you wear really big bright red shoes when you and your 23 closest friends drive around in your tiny little yellow (with red polka-dots) car.
Why did Apple make something similar? Because peope were using comic sans on lots, and lots of websites (and because MS would have given comic sans to them). Personally, I'd take the default font instead, but at least they toned down the 'friendliness' a little. Now though, OS X includes Comic Sans, so Chalkboard has become mostly useless. That last quote, is worrying? <a class="user" href="http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/1981/picture1yu1.png">http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/1981/picture1yu ...</a> ? I used to like Comic Sans when I first saw it when I was like 7, but it's so damn overused! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.

It's a good font for causal usage, but I'd opt for something else better looking, like Verdana, otherwise.

The most telling fact is that Comic Sans was born at the time of Microsoft BOB. It's perfect for BOB, in fact, I'd say the two are soulmates.Read this interview with Vincent Connare, he comes off as incredibly defensive and mean. I'd hate to ever have to work with this guy.<a class="user" href="http://www.manic.com.sg/blog/archives/000118.php">http://www.manic.com.sg/blog/archives/000118.php</a>

It has it's niché. Unfortunately, by way of being a default font in windows, its use has far surpassed that.

Hehe, I kinda like it now. . .when it's used right; like in. . .comic bubbles instead of danger labels; <a class="user" href="http://www.pulchry.com/pulchryzine/thoughts-on-comic-sans" rel="nofollow">http://www.pulchry.com/pulchryzine/thoughts-on-com ...</a> I wrote an article about it :)
