"America", at its broadest, refers to both North and South America as a whole. Many people from non-US American countries, especially in South America, find it fairly offensive the way the USA has co-opted the term "America" for its own personal use. This is somewhat complicated by the fact that in most languages there is no term for a person from the United States besides "American" and its cognates. In Spanish you have "estadounidense" which is kinda like calling someone a United Statesian, but that's about it.Of course the USA is the only country with "America" in its name, so it's not exactly illogical that they get at least some special claim on the word.
With an ever expanding universe, the odds of infinity and just dumb luck, you would think the score would be lop-sided in the other direction. It begs the question, 'Where are the all the extraterrestrial babes?'
It is true, I traveled to Japan recently, and people would give me strange looks if I said I am from the US. They did not know what I was talking about. I learned to say I am American, and then everyone would understand. Being from California really makes people happy to meet you.
