The only game in which I used cheat codes is .............. can you imagine??
solinvictusJun 27, 2010
I remember IDDQDing and IDKFAing my way through Doom. Made it a breeze, but I can't imagine playing it any other way, for some reason.

Same, other than Doom the only game I've cheated in was Diablo (using maphack and pindle/mephisto bot)

Hit IDDT twice in multiplayer in Doom 2 and you can see the other players on your map.

And if you're playing great, they'll blame you as a "hacker" anyway.

I hardly cheat, but Pokemon was an exception for me, and I never felt bad about it, either. I played few RPGs, and I was appalled at the notion that there was more to the game than skill. I mean sure, skill plays a part, but if you go against an opponent who is powerful enough, you'll lose no matter what. To me, the game itself cheated, so I had no problem cheating back.

The games get worse and worse at it too

OK a long shot...but did anyone play James pond 3 for the genesis/mega drive? If you put all green frogs on the code screen your character changed to a frog that could bounce as high as he wanted and eat things. I recommend finding a ROM of it actually, it's a great platformer.

I cheated like a motherf**ker in SimCity 2000.

"My original Blastoise, a respectable self-leveled 70 at the end of the game, became a level so high it didn’t exist in the game"
Lies. Level 100 is the upper limit, as every self respecting child of the 90s knows.

There's an enormous difference between cheating in competitive play and "changing the rules" in a single-player game. I recently went through a Fallout 3 binge, and I had no hangups about using console commands to make the game run the way I wanted it to. For example, I destroyed the town of Megaton at the beginning of the game, but regretted it around level 25, so I made a little mod, ran a few dozen lines through the console, and recreated it. Yeah, it was "cheating," but it only enhanced my enjoyment of the game.
Another thing I did was to give merchants more bottle caps. I still had to earn the money that I made, but at least I wouldn't get stuck trying to sell cartons of cigarettes to a merchant who only had 3 caps left.
A more black-and-white example is that it's possible to get your character hopelessly stuck in FO3. It's rare, but it happens. Being able to flip down the console and type 'tcl' (the noclip command) turns a show-stopping bug into a two-second inconvenience.
The author is totally conflating these two kinds of cheating. I _know_ that typing [player.additem f 10000] to give myself 10000 caps would screw up my enjoyment of the game by killing the challenge of scavenging, for example, so I don't do it. Is it really so difficult to exercise some self-control?

My rule for games is to use cheats ONLY after beating the game. That way, I have succeeded in completing the game without assistance. After that, its free reign to kick ass with all the weapons, god mode, whatever. Worked great for me.

If you use cheats on a single-player game, the only person whose gaming experience may be tarnished is yourself. Whatever
If you use cheats in a multi-player game, you are ruining the game for others, and deserve to be removed from the game permanently. I have no sympathy for those who whine after getting thwacked by the ban hammer.
And if you use cheats in multiplayer games, at least know how to use them, cus I just love wiping the floor with players who fail even while using cheats. Chasing cheaters off servers is often more fun than the game itself, especially when said cheaters probably paid money for their s**tty hacks.

I haven't used cheats in years, but when I was a kid it seemed like I cheated in pretty much every game I could... I think old games were generally harder, and I was generally worse at playing them when I was younger.

Pokemon was almost a broken game without cheating. The average pokemon had two semi-useful moves and a bunch of junk and only one HM was worth using in battle. So, the only way to get a "good" pokemon was to use the TMs, except those were once use only. Teach the wrong character a TM and it is gone forever (unless you like abandoning all of your work/play and starting from scratch again...) The ability to "break the game" by making multiple TM copies was awesome. Suddenly you could make all sorts of "move sets," experiment, etc. all without having to abandon your current game or exploit a link cable and second copy.
