When I worked at a Japanese restaurant we'd make what we called cheaters, which were pretty much the same as these. We'd unwrap chopsticks, roll up the paper and rubber band it in between the tops, so they were connected the same way these are. Stupider people would just stab the food with the ends.
@s0nicfreakCan spoons/forks be made out of wood/plastic/ivory/etc.?Do people that use metal chopsticks like the taste of metal?Should I consider myself lucky or inferior, because I can't taste the metal when I use stainless steel or silver utensils?
I read that traditionally it is extremely bad manners, even taboo to stab your food in certain asian cultures and that's why the stuff is all sized to be eaten by the bite. If this is true, it seems like these chopstick-fork things violate some fundamental chopstick etiquette.
"sorry for not being educated enough of asian utensils. All I know is when I go to a chinese restaurant, I get rice and chopsticks, and it's f**king stupid."As an Asian who uses chopstick; I actually have to say that I can somewhat share this sentiment regarding American-Chinese food restaurants. (like PFChang's *ew*, etc.)But the problem isn't really the rice/chopstick combo. It's the PLATE. You can't eat rice with chopsticks off a plate! you need a rice-bowl! They're not really for picking up stuff like tweezers, they're mostly for shoveling, and you can't bring up a plate to your mouth and do the chopstick shovel. I *always* have to ask for a little rice-bowl when they give me chopsticks. When you combine it with the fact that most American-Chinese restaurants don't have /quite/ sticky enough rice, it's just plain aggravating.knife and fork for a plate and individual portions.chopsticks for a little rice-bowl and big serving platters.

I think that the chork is just a way for Americans to stab away at their food with their chopsticks without feeling stupid.
