tech.blorge.com — China is about to put on sale its own computers running with its own processor and Linux. This news will not bring unalloyed delight to Intel and Microsoft. Wu Shaogang, a manager from manufacturer Lemote Technology has said the first batch of 80 computers powered by home-grown Chinese CPUs are undergoing user tests.

I don't know for sure about China, but given my experience with pricing in Taiwan and Japan, I'd say China would be consistent with those 2 and conclude that computers cost a lot more in China than they do here. I know for a fact Lenovo laptops in China are more than 2x the price of them here. While everything is made in China, they're not owned by China.

I doubt the computers will be very reliable, but if a mobo fails, it'll only be 30-40 to replace, most likely.

Worried about fabs in China? Cut taxes in the U.S. Fabs are all capex. Labor costs are in the noise. It's ridiculous when fabs go to a Communist nation for less taxation. We have nobody but ourselves to blame.

I'd like to see them come up with a decent GPU along with open source drivers (which should exclude DRM).

Hopefully new, faster, cheaper CPUs soon.
