io9.com — Synecdoche, New York, the latest film from Charlie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" Kaufman, creates its own brand of magical realism crossed with science fiction. The tale of a theater director with a grotesque disease directing a play that never ends, Synecdoche, New York is a meditation on relationships ? and time travel.

I'm a huge Kaufman fan (Adaptation is probably one of my favorite movies ever) and I thought it was awful. A lot of the philosophical concepts were redundant considering his previous work (some of them were almost line-for-line the same as lines from Malkovich or Adaptation or Sunshine) and the movie had pretty much the worst pacing I've ever seen. The last hour of it seems to drag on forever. In all of his other movies, things were air tight, and no one scene could be removed without ruining it. Very few of the scenes felt essential, and a lot of time was spent making slight variations of the same points. I know that Kaufman isn't like John Waters, he's not someone who believes that an 'artsy' movie can be successful without being mainstream entertaining (in fact, that idea is what Adaptation was about), and this movie was NOT entertaining. It was 'neat' or 'thought provoking' but there is no way it was enjoyable to watch. Maybe it's just because he's new at directing, but I was really disappointed in it, and I think he'll be too.
