physorg.com — Like cold case investigators, astronomers have used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to uncover evidence of a powerful outburst from the giant black hole at the Milky Way's center. Astronomers believe a mass equivalent to the planet Mercury was devoured by the black hole about 50 years earlier, causing an X-ray outburst

Because generally a massive black hole in the center of a galaxy spews out a lot of light/energy. I advise you to look up Quasars or AGN (Active Galactic Nucleii) to see how this works.

Black Holes burp X-rays.

Actually its from all the mass that reflects/emits light. The larger the mass being pulled into the blackhole the more light will be seen. So its not actually the blackhole that is making light its the matter that it is devouring.

Black holes are so cool. We don't know everything about them yet. Such a mystery.

I would say this is a bit "lame" since I have been following this research for years. Still, looking at the animations of those stars spinning at the center of the Milky Way around ??? shrink my soul to "motedom" and I'm glad to see more people informed. My friends, there are black holes among us! dugg

I think this was predicted by Stephen Hawking or someother related to black holes investigation, wasn't it? Was it previously observed?

Because there are a lot of stars there.
