Sodium benzoate will react with stronger acids such as hydrochloric acid which is found in the stomach and to a lesser extent weak acids such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Unfortunately, it will NOT form benzene but benzoic acid. The claims that it will form benzene when it combined with vitamin C are totally wrong. ****"Now, an expert in ageing at Sheffield University, who has been working on sodium benzoate since publishing a research paper in 1999, has decided to speak out about another danger. Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells in his laboratory. What he found alarmed him: the benzoate was damaging an important area of DNA in the "power station" of cells known as the mitochondria."****Note that the test was performed on living yeast cells. This is a very different situation to what is happening in the gut. My guess is that Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers and was after a grant to conduct more research. The levels that the yeast cells were exposed to is not mentioned. This may be artificially high to accelerate and amplify the effect. Many "safe" substances will cause cancers and other health problems when cells are exposed to very high levels. A good example is salt. Sodium benzoate is a preservative. It is in food to stop things such as yeast, moulds and bateria growing. Yeasts are very adaptive and can change the way they process nutrients depending on the conditions they are living in. Further, when they become dormant, they under go DNA changes which produce a new strain of yeast. It should also be noted that sodium and potassium benzoate have been used for many decades as preservatives with no documented health problems when used at the correct level. This is effectively a large scale trial which has proved that sodium benzoate is a low risk. Maybe there is some adverse effect but it is a very low risk and I would want to see some real data before giving up Fanta, coke and many fruit juices. Naturally, there may be other problems if excessive amounts of soft drinks are consumed and many energy drinks have recommended daily intakes on the bottles. Most people know that too much cola can give you problems from excess caffeine and sugar (diabetes). Benzene is a problem but you would absorb more benzene filling your tank with unleaded (premium is even worse) than drinking a couple of bottle of fanta.

I'm always telling people how disgusting soda is. I mean I think craft brewed ones are a lot better for you, and obviously in limited quantities. But the way a lot of people drink soda is absolutely disgusting.

Did anyone think that soda (pop) is good for one (except for Coke spokespeople: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Weekend/Story?id=3191903&page=2)?

Yes, I truly agree to this, as the best health care is in our hands only & we should not negate that with junk food & drinks. Take care everybody!

I was just reading about something similar to this in the book Clean. A great read, for those of you who haven't taken a look at it yet. Thanks for the article!

Research suggests kids who drink a lot of soft drinks risk becoming fat, weak-boned, cavity-prone and caffeine-addicted.
