Mainstream Christianity and Roman Catholicism do not take the biblical creation story literally; the incompatibility only occurs when the creation story is taken literally. Fundamentalists are incompatible with evolution because they take the biblical creation story literally.

I want to reiterate that I'm not here to bash anyone and that I don't think of anyone less because of their beliefs. I do however have issues with certain religious organizations, Catholicism included, and will on occasion speak out about it. My main beef is that some organizations add to and take from God's Word and call it by the same name when it is not:"And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book." - Revelation 22:19To me, that describes someone who is not Christian - many of you simply have a definition which is more broad.
