bloomberg.com — Dealers in the U.S. ?cash-for- clunkers? program are being forced to disable trade-in vehicles with a chemical under new rules to prevent those who take the government subsidies from reselling the cars. Dealers must replace the oil in the ?clunker? with two quarts of sodium silicate solution and run the engine for up to seven minutes.

15 mpg used up SUV for a 41 mpg diesel. I don't want a car payment but I would have kept the old one for a while but for the opportunity. The amount of the trade in value is equal to less than two months of my fed taxes. It's about time I got something back. I hope Econ theory is right and consumption simulates the economy because I'm done stimulating for a while.

Because it takes lots of oil to BUILD a car.And when you discard it prematurely, that's all wasted.

I have to agree that this is just a waste of time and money, how many poor people or families with low income can afford the upgrade, what if they don't have the credit or enough income to make the change, is it really worth it. I mean there are many other things that we can be focusing on other than this program.

So in other words, this is one giant waste of money. No surprise there.
