reghardware.co.uk — According to witnesses, the notebook began to emit smoke, at which point the clearly asbestos-fingered owner pulled out the smoking power cell and punted it outside into his firm's parking lot. Just in time: the battery caught fire almost immediately

A combination of things:For one thing evolution in battery technology allows battery makers to squeeze more power into a smaller size, of course more power could mean more "power"Consolidations have caused more companies to get their batteries from fewer sources, the current crop of fires seems to be related to Sony batteries in several different models of laptops, if Dell, HP & Apple are buying their batteries from Sony I wondoer how many other battery makersare even left. Whern there is only one or two battery makers a problem can become very widespread. Finally, the more this makes headlines the more likely people are to report it, which imakes it create even more headlines and feeds the cycle.

I'd hardly call his laptop "saved", that thing is barbeque inside.

Of course the first thing I do when my laptop catches fire is to pick up my video camera...f**k that, thrown the thing on the floor, that's not even video from a mobile phone, it HAS to be faked.

I put in for a replacement when Dell announced it. I still have not recieved the new one and have been working without a battery since. I am not very happy about this at all.

Are HP laptops even worth saving?
therealstyroSep 26, 2006
I guess it will soon be my time to check the laptop and battery serial number and call for a replacement. Since 99% of the time it is used on adapter power (battery life is ~90 minutes) I guess I should remove the battery. Serves me right for buying an HP.

I got an idea for the data problem. If its like my laptop just remove the screw that holds the hard drive in place. And hope it does not fall out. But if the battery goes then you can yank out the hard drive and toss the laptop. The scary thing is I do own a dell.
