p2pnet.net — A Canadian university has ruled against Wi-Fi on the campus because administrators are worried about possible hazards to student health. Lakehead is located at the head of Lake Superior in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and president Fred Gilbert won’t allow Wi-Fi, "until he’s satisfied EMF (electric and magnetic fields) exposure doesn’t pose a..

I am also a student at UBC in Vancouver. We have a huge campus in the West End of Vancouver, Canada and Wifi here rocks. It definitely helps with groupwork, professors use it for lectures, it helps us recruit conferences, and it means that you can spend the day doing work wherever with your laptop. It isn't necessary to bash Lakehead over this though. I wonder about the degree to which laptops and Tablet PCs are a part of campus life there. It may also be a cost factor to set up wifi and be more dependent on the courses that the university offers. I am actually from Ontario but I don't know much about wifi at the universities there. Are there any other universities that have wifi throughout campus?

The University of Western Ontario has WiFi in most buildings, but not campuswide (yet). It's quite convenient and does contribute to the quality of education. When you can go to the library with a laptop, look up books you need online, then go get them and start writing immediately, it saves time and lets you get more learning done. Mmm, learning. This guy is slowing progress based on weird radical paranoid beliefs. Is he going to outlaw sweetener on campus because there are some studies saying it causes cancer? Then outlaw sugar because it causes diabetes?Dumb.

Instead of ruling out Wi-Fi altogether why doesn't he simply look into some of the companies like BIOPRO ( http://www.mybiopro.com/jarett ) that makes products that neutralize EMF?

The accumulated damage from all our technology is accumulating, but we won't see all the effects for decades - just like smoking electromagnetic radiation has cumulative effects. It's great the schools are taking a stand, but what about all the other radiation coming from cell towers, cell phones and all the rest of our technology.
