globalpost.com — TORONTO: Canada has long been a haven for Americans escaping their wars. During the American Revolutionary War in the late 1700's an estimated 50% colonists who wanted to remain loyal to Britain fled north to what would later become Canada. Thousands more crossed the border during...

As a Canadian I can support the government stance that if you sign on for military duty voluntarily then you shouldn?t be granted amnesty. They should be treated the same as our soldiers. However if his claim is true and his contract was essentially renegotiated to include duties that he never agreed to then he should be released from duty.I?ve never had to deal with a draft or military service so I don?t know what an agreement actually looks like. The Stop-Gap procedures mentioned sound allot like an extension of his contract made without consent. There should be some sort of review process for these exceptions.

Both a draft and stop loss orders are immoral and I really don't have a problem with people dodging those. If however, you sign the dotted line you must honor your commitment. I think that stop loss is the government not honoring their side of the agreement. If you sign for 3 years you ought to be able to quit after 3 with no exceptions.

Every initial enlistment contract is 8 years. How much of that 8 years served on active duty is what people mainly focus on. Usually it is 4/4. 4 years active and 4 inactive. That inactive time can be drilling or have nothing to do with the military. This is called IRR or Inactive Ready Reserve. You don't need to keep your uniform or in shape but you are subject to recall to active duty. I know, I was recalled. My first enlistment contract had only two things guaranteed in writing. Yes, I actually read it.1. One meal per day.2. One hour of sleep per day. (Did not say that had to be a continuous hour)It also said that I can be held on active duty if needed. I don't remember the exact wording and don't feel like pulling it out to read. Therefore no excuse for stop-loss. Yes it is harsh, but at least now the government has to pay you additional money for being stop-lossed. They didn't do that when I was stop-lossed.

You know in essence they were lied to, what a minute not in essence the man was literally lied to.

Different time, different place...As a Canuck, Canada is NOT the drop point for people unwilling to do their agreed upon contract. It's a job. If a soldier wants to quit, it is possible to resign. Whether it's accepted or not, it entirely another matter. But by choice, someone signed up for the job. I volunteered for the Canadian Forces and I was assigned to Bosnia, I did my four year contract, received my ROTC and I've been very happy as a computer engineer for twenty years. While removing landmines, booby trapped doors, exploding children's playgrounds and dodging bullets (shot twice). I thought about going home, running away but I had a job to do. Yes, it gets tough but when you sign up you are not signing up for massages and handjobs. You are signing up as a Soldier and anyone signing up as a Soldier should understand somethings about being a soldier. Most of you will never see it because of total disinterest and/or fear. So a couple of things.- Nothing goes right. Ever. Jeep breaks. Tanks throw their feet. Batteries run out in a field. You just deal with it and prepare better next time so you don't die.- People are going to shoot at you. Wear your armour. Your Helmet. Keep an eye for somewhere to hide. Again you deal with it so you don't die.- Some of the other soldiers will be dicks to everyone and anyone they can get attention from. Keep an eye on their stuff. Their stamps. Paper, Pens, walkman, porn, games, cigarettes, booze. The d**kh**ds usual come back in plastic. They won't need their stuff, they go back naked with a flag. Again you deal with it and you won't die. All you can hope in that situation is that they didn't breed to continue the stupidity that was them. Unbelievable the crap that would be made up half the time on my fellow co-workers deaths. But the general rule is every bag goes home with a story even if they got drunk and crashed a jeep or were marching with live ammo/safety off, tripped and destroy the two guys in front with an M-16. Remember everyone is hero heading home.- Time is build of concrete. It just doesn't move fast enough. Even if the situation is awful. You either want time to speed up for one of two reasons. Too much is going on and you want it to be over. Too little is going on and you want it to be over. You would be surprised how many peacekeepers spend their days on acid or meth because it's usually somewhere on camp.As far as Canada being on the grid, last I looked everyone is. There are Tibetian goat herders with cell phones. Ass.
