They have to file for approval with the FCC, and it's a public process. If they hadn't made an announcement it would have become common knowledge anyway, and Apple would have missed out on one of their famous product announcements.

iphone is a piece of bull compared to the phones that will surface the market over the next couple of months. I personally don't like the F700, it looks like a cheap imitation of HTC's devices.
